Socio-Economic Impact of Tsunami on Fisheries and Coastal Communities in Kerala

    Get PDF
The Indian Ocean tsunami of 26th December2004 was a series of giant sea waves unleashed by the massive earthquake beneath the sea with its epicentre located about 250 km South East of Sumatra, Indonesia. The huge waves of tsunami lashed across thirteen countries of the world, one among the worst hit being India. Tsunami caused considerable destruction and causalities in the coastal regions of the states including Tamil Nadu, Pondichery, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Andaman & Nicobar Islands. In Kerala, 187 villages were affected, registering a death toll of 180 persons and huge damage to assets and livelihood. This study was conducted at different landing centres in the tsunami affected regions of Kerala. The impact of tsunami on the fisheries was catastrophic as in the case of other affected segments, impinging on the livelihood of already poverty stricken fisher households. Non-mechanized and motorized segments were the worst affected among different sectors of marine fisheries. Maximum reduction in landings was experienced by plank-built boats with gillnet (motorized) and country crafts with gillnets (non-mechanized)

Cultural Identity Loss of the Main Characters in Chinua Achebes Things Fall Apart

Identity and culture are considered to be the relevant aspects of the post-colonial literature for two reasons: First, because they are so central to the growing power of imperial discourse over the nineteenth century, and secondly they remain central and unavoidable facts of the modern society as known as the dominant parts of the social discrimination and prejudice. Africa has a unique cultural heritage with a distinct past. African Literature often makes assumptions about the existence of the unified African culture, but closer inspection reveals a far more complex and a problematic picture. It reflects the cultural traditions, colonial history, and inner conflicts of African people. While drawing together a wide variety of theoretical and critical perspectives of post-colonial literature in English, the present study aims at exploring perpetuate unequal economic and cultural relations with the struggle of the people concerned with race, religion, invasion and pacification in the form of the issues of identity and culture

Effect of Rotational Modulation on Rayleigh – B´enard Convection in a Couple Stress Liquid

    Get PDF
The Rayleigh-B´enard convection in a couple stress liquid with rotational modulation is studied using the linear analysis based on normal mode technique. The stability of a horizontal layer of fluid heated from below is examined when, in addition to a steady rotation, a time-periodic sinusoidal perturbation is applied. The expression for Rayleigh number and correction Rayleigh number are obtained using regular perturbation method. The expression for correction Rayleigh number is obtained as a function of frequency of modulation, Taylor number, Couple Stress parameter and Prandtl number. It is observed that rotational modulation leads to delay in onset of convection. Rotation modulation is an example of external control of internal convection

{Cn, C4}-Decomposition of the line graph of the complete graph

    Get PDF
For given positive integer n ≥ 4, let Cn, Kn and L(Kn) respectively denote a cycle with n edges, a complete graph on n vertices and the line graph of the complete graph Kn. For a given graph G, if H1, H2, ..., Hl are the edge disjoint subgraphs such that E(G) = E(H1) ∪ E(H2) ∪ ... ∪ E(Hl), then we say that H1, H2, ..., Hl decompose G. If G has a decomposition into copies of H1 and H2 using atleast one of each, then we say that G has a {H1, H2}-decomposition (or) G is {H1, H2}-decomposable. In this paper, it is proved that L(Kn) is {Cn, C4}-decomposable

Comparative antibacterial and antifungal activities of benzene extract of three medicinal plants

    Get PDF
Objective: This study was carried out with an objective to investigate the antibacterial and antifungal potential of three Indian medicinal plants. Methods: Antimicrobial activity of benzene extracts of three plants namely Abutilon indicum, Plectranthus amboinicus, Aegle marmelos were determined using agar disc diffusion method at different concentration from 5-30 μg/μl against two gram positive Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis and two fungal strains Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus fumigatus and compared with standard drugs Norfloxacin & Fluconazole respectively. Results: Benzene extract of fruits from Abutilon indicum inhibited Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis at 30 μg/μl and leaves of Plectranthus amboinicus showed considerable inhibiting activity against the Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus fumigatus at 30 μg/μl.Conclusion: Hence, these plants can be further used to determine the bioactive natural products that may provide as leads in the development of new drugs

Comparative Analysis and Evaluation of Image inpainting Algorithms

    Get PDF
Image inpainting refers to the task of filling in the missing or damaged regions of an image in an undetectable manner. There are a large variety of image inpainting algorithms existing in the literature. They can broadly be grouped into two categories such as Partial Differential Equation (PDE) based algorithms and Exemplar based Texture synthesis algorithms. However no recent study has been undertaken for a comparative evaluation of these algorithms. In this paper, we are comparing two different types of image inpainting algorithms. The algorithms analyzed are Marcelo Bertalmio’s PDE based inpainting algorithm and Zhaolin Lu et al’s exemplar based Image inpainting algorithm. Both theoretical analysis and experiments have made to analyze the results of these image inpainting algorithms on the basis of both qualitative and quantitative way. Keywords:Image inpainting, Exemplar based, Texture synthesis, Partial Differential Equation (PDE)

Occurrence of algal stem blotch in ber (Ziziphus mauritiana) under coastal Odisha conditions in India

    Get PDF
The investigation was carried out during 2017-18 to identify and document the emerging diseases of Indian Jujube or ber (Ziziphus mauritiana Lamk.) in Odisha state located in Eastern part of India. Periodical visit and subsequent investigations revealed the occurrence of a new kind of stem blotch disease in ber caused by alga. Symptoms were observed on bark of the stem and branches as bright red velvety blotch colonies during July- September 2017. However dull grey blotches were visible throughout the year. Leaves and fruits were left unaffected. The algal stem blotch occurrence was assessed during the year 2018 and disease severity rangedfrom 9.4-14.8 per cent. The green alga was identified and confirmed as Trentepohlia arborum (Agardh) Hariot based on key morphological characters. The stem blotches lead to death of young twigs measured between 3 to 8 mm thickness on primary and secondary branches wherein thickness of branches was more than 10 mm, algal blotches caused cracking of bark. Present study highlights the causal agent of stem blotch of ber, its symptomatology, impact of disease and suggested management practices

Combined Structure and Texture Image Inpainting Algorithm for Natural Scene Image Completion

    Get PDF
Image inpainting or image completion refers to the task of filling in the missing or damaged regions of an image in a visually plausible way. Many works on this subject have been proposed these recent years. We present a hybrid method for completion of images of natural scenery, where the removal of a foreground object creates a hole in the image. The basic idea is to decompose the original image into a structure and a texture image. Reconstruction of each image is performed separately. The missing information in the structure component is reconstructed using a structure inpainting algorithm, while the texture component is repaired by an improved exemplar based texture synthesis technique. Taking advantage of both the structure inpainting methods and texture synthesis techniques, we designed an effective image reconstruction method. A comparison with some existing methods on different natural images shows the merits of our proposed approach in providing high quality inpainted images.
